Enrique Peña Nieto and His Bid for the Presidency

The latest darling of Mexico's political scene is the handsome Enrique Peña Nieto. Among all those running for president, Nieto is perhaps the most popular at the moment. His opponents are worried that if the elections were held today, he would definitely win.

Although the formal campaigning has yet to begin, Nieto seems to already be on the up and up with the voting population. One of his specialtiies is the art of public speaking, which obviously helps his cause. He possesses an intense magnetism that takes him an hour to walk through a crowd because women grab on to him and do not want to let him go.

Televisa is often named as a conspirator in Nieto's seemingly unassailable popularity. They say that he paid off the media conglomerate to get it to repeatedly show news about the things he has already achieved, in a sort of TV campaign. It is said that this is why the media giant keeps advertising the highlights of the politician's career.

It is proposed by some that the rumors were given voice only because Nieto admitted that he was seeing someone from the network's roster of stars, Angelica Rivera. Rivera is famous in her own right, perhaps even more popular than Nieto in a sense, given how many times her face has shown up in various soap operas with a cult following. Before Rivera, Nieto was in a marriage with Monica Pretelini, who died.

The pair had a trio of offspring. Pretelini expired of a cardiac complication when Nieto was still the governor of the State of Mexico. After this, the famed governor became Mexico's most eligible bachelor, attracting television cameras and women wherever he went.

This popularity with the ladies makes up only a portion of his repute. He is also known for having solicited a great many requests and made promises to fulfill them. His work has been primarily concerned with infrastructure development.

Nieto is known for having held large parties or gatherings during inaugural dates of the resulting public works. Peña Nieto has successfully created an image of a man who gets things done, and one who works at keeping his promises to his people. Opponents still note that Nieto's expenditures for the promotions of his "completed promises" were far higher than the expenditures for the completion of the promises themselves.

Some remarks Nieto made at a book fair also garnered him a few scathing notes from his opponents. The former governor became the target of jokes for failing to recall the titles and authors of books that he considered his favorites. Nieto's reason was that he preferred to expend more time remembering the body of the book instead of what was on its cover.

His inability to recall such details got a lot of his critics laughing at his expense, though. It was made worse when one of his offspring, understandably upset about others' ridicule of her father, ended up saying something less than diplomatic about her father's opponents. While Peña Nieto acknowledged his mistakes and apologized for his daughter's emotional retort, his critics maintain their judgment on Nieto's lack of intellectual curiosity and spontaneity, and of being too dependent on scripted discourse.

It is a shame, Enrique Peña Nieto claims, that so much of his speech ends up being taken apart and decontextualized. That having been said, Nieto's bid for the presidential seat is still strong. Even as the other candidates have much longer and extensive political experience than him, he remains a tough contender because he is the one who will bring in the votes.
